SEOUL, May 7 (Yonhap) -- LG CNS Co. expressed a goal of becoming a major partner for companies seeking to incorporate robots into their business, as it unveiled the company's new platform that can train and manage robots.
The information technology affiliate of South Korea's LG Electronics Inc. introduced PhysicalWorks, a platform for managing the data and operation of robots, at a media event held at the company's research and development center in western Seoul.
"The key in robot adoption lies not in the capabilities of individual robots, but in establishing a system for on-site learning, verification and integrated operations," Hyun Shin-gyoon, the company's chief executive officer, said at the event.
The platform is comprised of two parts -- PhysicalWorks Forge, which manages the training of robots, and PhysicalWorks Baton, a comprehensive robot controlling system.
LG CNS said its Baton system is already used to control four types of robots under a smart city project in the port city of Busan, some 330 kilometers southeast of Seoul.
Currently, the company is testing the PhysicalWorks platform with a dozen clients from various industries, spanning electronics to chemicals and logistics, an official said during the event.
"For now, we plan to apply PhysicalWorks at manufacturing and logistics sites, where there are already ample amounts of experience and data," an official from the company said. "We expect to see tangible business results within the next two years."
LG CNS added it plans to speed up investments in robotics, adding it is actively seeking merger and acquisition opportunities in the field.
