Carlton has confirmed young star Elijah Hollands has been admitted to hospital after the worrying scenes from Thursday night's game against Collingwood.

The AFL and AFLPA are awaiting the findings of a club investigation, after Hollands suffered a mental health episode during the game.

It is understood Hollands told Blues officials before the game that he was struggling with his mental health, but that he was eager to play.

Blues CEO Graham Wright said officials had been "aware that he was struggling in the game", but they continued to play the 23-year-old despite Hollands failing to register a stat and appearing to be out of sorts before the game had started.

"Our guys were dealing with him in the game and obviously knew that he was having some problems," Wright said.

"We're in the process of going through all the circumstances leading up to the game, two or three weeks prior to the game.

"Our primary focus remains on caring for Elijah, making sure he continues to receive the medical and wellbeing support he needs.

"Our staff have been working alongside Elijah on this journey with him over a long period of time now, both on and off the field, providing every resource possible to ensure his welfare is paramount.

"Thursday night presented unprecedented and complex circumstances. We're taking this very seriously."
